Amazon has ended its unlimited cloud storage offering for Amazon Drive users, offering two new paid options of 100 GB for 11.99 dollars and 1 TB for 59.99 dollars. Users can continue to add storage up to a cap set at 30 TB, with an additional 59.99 dollars per TB.
Until now, users could store as much data as they liked on Amazon’s servers paying 60 dollars a year for data and 12 dollars a year for just unlimited photos. Amazon has clarified though that Amazon Prime users will continue to enjoy their unlimited photos subscription. The changes will set in today for all users apart from those already subscribed to the unlimited storage plan until the end of the subscription.
Adding on the changes, Amazon also confirmed that users taking advantage of the unlimited storage deal who do not want to start paying for the new plans will have a total of 180 days to download and save a backup of their data or delete it, using Amazon’s Drive Desktop application. Following the grace period, Amazon will start deleting content starting with most recent uploads until the account falls within the new parameters.
New users who sign up for Amazon Drive will be given up to 5 GB of storage, similar to that offered on Apple’s iCloud. The move by Amazon was expected sooner or later as was the case with rival cloud storage providers in Dropbox and Google Drive, as well as Microsoft’s OneDrive.
