How to choose right memory card for your device?

 

Most smartphones, tablets and entry-level cameras usually work fine with basic memory cards, less expensive memory cards. However, if you're taking higher-resolution photos or video, especially 4K Ultra HD, then you'll need a high-speed card with more memory to ensure quality results and reliable operation. It's a good idea to start with a Speed Class 10 or UHS Speed 1 memory card to ensure top performance, whatever your needs. If you will be taking video (especially in 4K), or burst photos, a UHS Speed 3 card will provide the speed you need and ensure optimal performance, even in the most demanding recording scenario.
   
Compatibility

Memory cards come in many different formats, and you need the correct format in order for it to work with your device. The vast majority of new cameras, camcorders and other devices use Secure Digital (SD) or microSD memory cards. MicroSD is the smaller variant of the SD memory card and, because of its compact size, microSD is used in certain mobile devices as well.

Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) and Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) cards can store substantially more photos and videos than traditional SD cards. However, these formats are not backward compatible, so you need to make sure your device supports these higher-end cards.


Choosing speed of memory cards

A memory card's speed plays a large role in the effectiveness of the card, but is often overlooked. Filming 4K video, taking high-resolution photos, and taking rapid burst shots require a higher-speed memory card in order to process large amounts of data quickly. On the other hand, low-resolution photos do not require as much speed.

 

Write Speed:-

A memory card's write speed is very important. It's a major determining factor of how fast you'll be able to take photos and video. While shooting photos or video, the data is stored on a memory buffer while it is being written to the memory card. Write speed determines how fast your photos and video move from that buffer onto the card. If you have a slower memory card, you may have to wait for the memory card to finish writing before you are able to take additional shots, which could cause you to miss the perfect photo. If your card is too slow to properly handle video, it may cause dropped frames, inferior quality, or stop recording altogether. Again, the important thing to remember is that the more demanding your shooting needs are, the more memory card speed you need.

A memory card's minimum writing performance is designated by Speed Class and Ultra High Speed (UHS) Speed Class. Bus speed is the rate at which data can be transferred per second.

Speed Classes 2, 4, and 6 cards are still available, but are usually not fast enough for the demanding needs of modern cameras. Speed Class 10 memory cards are a great option for normal and high-speed uses like standard video recording, HD and Full HD recording, and taking continuous high-resolution photos. Classes 2, 4, and 6 use normal bus speed, while Class 10 uses high bus speed.

UHS Speed U1 and U3 classes are higher speed and utilize UHS-I and UHS-II bus speeds. U1 is good for Full HD recording and for taking continuous high-resolution photos, like in burst shot mode. U3 cards are necessary for recording video in 4K.

Read Speed:-

A memory card's read speed determines how fast you can transfer data from the card onto a computer or laptop. Whereas write speed is a critical need, read speed is generally just more of a convenience. Faster read speeds decrease your wait time so you can edit, save and share faster.


Capacity of memory card

 

A memory card's capacity determines how many photos and minutes of video you can save. Card capacity is usually measured in gigabytes (GB), and memory cards typically come in 8GB , 16GB,32GB, 64GB and 128GB capacities. However, some high-capacity cards can now hold terabytes (TB) of data. One TB is equal to 1,000 GB. Having more memory means you can take more shots and videos without having to switch out your card, but make sure your camera can utilize very large cards before making the purchase.
